Brief Answer:
Without reactive HIV test, peripheral neuropathy in HIV can't be diagnosed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service.
Thanks for posting your query.

Peripheral Neuropathy can occur in many situations other than HIV like uncontrolled Diabetes mallitus, Vitamin deficiencies, chronic alcoholism, due to drugs, Hansen's disease and many other central nervous system diseases.

Peripheral neuropathy etiology may be different whereas the symptoms are same. It will be usually tingling or pricking sensation or numbness over both feet extends to glove and stocking type of loss of sensation, paraesthesia. Very rarely it would lead to the extreme degree of paraplegia if not interfered earlier.

HIV as an etiology for peripheral neuropathy or due to HIV drugs can occur only with advanced disease condition and not as an early symptom and without a positive HIV test one can not suspect the same.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

I do have some tingling in feet but mainly a burning sensation in the soles of both feet. I get it also occasionally in arms and a patch on the face around left cheek and mouth. It comes and goes and isn’t always there. Does this sound like HIV NP to you?

I also took a another Oraquick oral swab this morning and it was negative this would have been after 3-4 years after a possible exposure.

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms are not related to HIV infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

First of all, if the neuropathy is due to HIV infection, your blood test for HIV should have been reactive. If these tests for HIV were Non-reactive 3 months after the risky contact, then your symptoms are unlikely to be due to HIV infection.

Major symptoms of HIV infection will be manifested 5-7 years, sometimes more than 10 years after the exposure, not earlier than that. Early manifestations of HIV are loss of weight, oral thrush, non healing ulcers, skin infections etc.

Brief Answer:
You are free from HIV infection as per your test reports.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
All the HIV test kits available in the market are highly reliable to the extent of 97% and above. When the tests are nonreactive more than once after 12 weeks, increases the reliability further. 4th generation combo test is more reliable to the extent of 99% and above 12 weeks after the exposure.
