Question: Its been 15 days I had got Covid infection.

It started with 3 episodes of heart palpitations in the span of 4 days. Each episode lasts for about 2 hours and the heart rate spikes to about 120-130. Where as my normal resting heart rate is around 85-90

Consulted cardiologist. ECG and Echo 2d came back normal with no findings
Thyroid profile was done and its normal
CBC was normal as well with mild elevation with RBC. It was 5.6 where as the normal lab value is 5.5

Doctor had put me on propronolol 40mg per day for a month its been 3 -4 days i am using it and feel good

1. I heard propronolol cannot be stopped suddenly so concerned about the saftey of the medication

2. I currently do not experience any palpitations post starting beta blockers.

Please let me know if i am going in the right direction

Brief Answer:
You are going in the right direction

Detailed Answer:
Hello Pruthvi,

Thanks for posting your query. I have read it, and understand your health concern.

You have done the right thing by consulting a Cardiologist and getting investigations done. Don't worry about the RBC value, it is still normal.

Coming to your questions:

1) Yes, Propranolol cannot be stopped suddenly. The reason being that it may cause adverse effects on abrupt withdrawal like increased heart beat, irregular heart rhythms, high blood pressure, etc. Your doctor will taper the dose of propranolol gradually and then stop it. Also, you have been prescribed the medicine for a month. So, we cannot expect any major side effects with it. Do not worry. The medicine is safe for you.

2) I am glad the medicine is working, and you are not experiencing any palpitations now.

Please relax, and take the medicine as suggested. You should be fine soon.

Let me know about any doubts that you may have.

Get well soon.

Regards,
Dr Shanthi E
