My Sister Was Diagnosed With AML After She Was Admitted
Question: My sister was diagnosed with AML after she was admitted to the hospital when a cut didn’t heal. They found out after blood tests and bone marrow tests. She has had 2 treatments of chemo. They didn’t get it all the first time. It has been over a week since her last treatment and her blood cell count isn’t improving. Is this normal? The doctor is being vague. I read most patients with AML go into remission after chemo is it possible she may not respond treatment? Then what?

Hello dear. I have gone through the details. So post induction chemotherapy, few patients take longer time for their marrow to recover and at that time a repeat marrow examination will reveal whether patient is in remission or not. Depending upon the results, further therapy is planned.
A few patients may not respond to treatment and then they go for high dose therapy followed by transplant.

Since they are waiting for blood levels to recover before retesting bone marrow, are blood counts usually an indication that the induction therapy is successful? Is it thpical for it to take weeks before blood counts resume to normal?

In many patients, counts recovery occur within 2 weeks. A few takes longer. Counts recovery sometimes can tell about success of induction therapy, however a marrow response is must.
