What Should I Do About Excessive Belching Which Only Temporarily Subsided With Sandoz-Ondansetron And Simethicone Chewable Tablets?

Question: For two months, my wife has been burping 8-11 hours per day non-stop. It seems like a constant supply of air is in her stomach. We tried all remedies on the internet, numerous prescriptions and over the counter remedies. She does not seem to have any acid reflux pain. Zero quality of life. She is waiting for an endoscope but no date in sight. She does not burp while she is sleeping. Sandoz-Ondansetron provided temporary relief with side effects (constipation). Simethicone chewable tablets also provided some temporary relief.

Brief Answer:
Depleted gut flora.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Have gone through details and i appreciate your concerns.

Our gastrointestinal tract has a forward propulsive movement (peristalsis) that moves the food material forward as it is digested, absorbed and finally expelled as feces. If somehow this movement gets hampered, food along with the digestive juices would stagnate, stomach acid will reflux into the food pipe and on the other hand the bowel habits would not be proper. Degradation of undigested food in the intestines by the intestinal bacteria would lead to the excess gas formation.

So what i would suggest her is a proper approach to the problem-
Rx
Start taking a probiotic called VSL## twice daily. Probiotic would improve the gut flora and would help in proper digestion and fermentation of food. When ever the bad flora of gut over powers the good bacterial flora large amount of toxic gases would be formed as a result of incomplete fermentation of food which would cause excessive burping bloating.By restoring the good bacterial colonies in gut this problem could be solved.
Secondly give her a course of Rifaxamin 400mg once daily for 14 days. This would help to destroy the bad bacterial colonies formed.
Along with it start giving her a ppi like Nexium 40 mg once daily for few days.

Follow up after 10 days however she should start feeling better in a week.
Regards and feel free to follow up sir.

Thank you for the response. Do you mean VSL#3 above? Is a milder probiotic or alternative probiotic worth a try?
