Is Elevated SGPT Level A Serious Concern?

Hi. I am a 36 yr old male. I have always been active and in great shape. Aug 2021 I had major spinal surgery which has slowed me down quite a bit. I recently had some blood test done and my sgpt was at 112. I have also packed on about 20lbs since my surgery. Do you have any advice that could help?

Hello,

High SGPT commonly occurs due to underlying medical condition like cholecystitis, hepatitis, obesity, alcohol, and drug abuse, among others like weather changes or pollution that may affect the liver. Sometimes, unhealthy eating habits, lack of sleep, careless lifestyle, also leads to live problems. You are advised to get clinically examined by a GP, get liver function tests, blood tests, Urinalysis, ultrasonography or CAT scan and liver biopsy be done.

Your treatment will depend on the pathology diagnosed & on the severity of your symptoms. In the meantime, to help lower your SGPT level, restrict alcoholic intake. Quit smoking, do brisk walking, to help control obesity. Maintain healthy weight. Take boiled food or food cooked in olive oil.

Blueberries, raspberries, and berries can be taken as they contain antioxidants called polyphenols. It protects the liver from damage. Avoid fried food, fatty food, junk food, or hot spicy food. Take boiled water after cooling. Take food good for the liver & you can take liver tonic like liv 52 and digestives.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
