What Causes Loss Of Colour In Face After Dental Anesthesia?

A couple of years ago I went to my dentist to have a molar capped on the bottom right jaw . He gave me an injection and not only did the whole side of my mouth and face become numb but I lost all color on the right side of my face. It looked like I was wearing a wax mask on the whole right side of my face. Needless to say I was very concerned as was my dentist. He said this was only the second time in his career (probably 20 years) that this had happened. He sat with me for an hour until my face started to regain color. I have had no lasting effect except fear. Now he tell me I have a cavity on that side and wants to give me novacaine. Since he will be numbing that side I am considering starting the work on that molar as it is giving me some issues. No pain but sometimes when I chew I almost feel like the food has created a vacuum and the chewing releases it. Gross. But I am really concerned about getting an injection there and need some advice. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

It's just a cutaneous complication due to local anesthesia with adrenaline. Do not misinterpret the complication. Most important measure that can be taken is aspiration control before injecting anesthetic solution and inject anesthetic agent at a slow rate after negative aspiration.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
