What Causes Weight Gain While On Losartan?

Hi, My husband has high blood pressure and takes Losartin 50 mg every day. He has gained a little weight over the winter and we took his blood pressure over the weekend at at home, it was very high. We kept taking it and it was 190 over 80. I heard the home ones, tend to be a bit higher. We went to our neighborhood gricery stire and used the pharmacy one and did it three times. The list was better, but still high. It was 161 over 97. He is starting to eat better and planning in losing weight, but should he go see his doctor right away tomorrow? Maybe they will have him take a higher dose of his medicine? Thank you and I will wait to hear from you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I would advise you to get his blood pressure tracked for a week and if it continues to be on the higher side that is above 140/90, then you should go to your physician and get him checked. He may increase the dose of Losartan or substitute it with a different antihypertensive medication.

Weight gain also leads to high blood pressure and it is advisable for him to lose the extra pounds and maintain a body weight appropriate according to his height and age. Restriction of salt is also advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma amman
