default
Posted on Mon, 29 Apr 2024
Question: Hi I am 65 years old with a medical concern .i have mild thyroid , and high blood pressure and im on medication for both . Also cholesterol pills for high cholesterol. I was at my primary care physician in October 2017 and all my labs came back normal . The medication that I'm taking is the following : metropol succ 25 mg, valisartan 80mg and levothyroxine 75mcg. For the past 10 days everytime I bent and get up I feel dizzy . Sometimes even when I lay down I feel dizzy . Nothing more than the dizziness though . No blurry vision . No vomiting , no migraines no nothing . Just dizyness . I also feel my lips chopped and dry every morning that I wake up . What do these symptoms indicate ? I'm
Paranoid and thinking of the worse such as brain tumors etc . I have an appointment w my doctor but not until 3 weeks from now so I m turning to u for a diagnoses since my daughter has also used this website and she's very satisfied ! Please advise !

Hello and welcome,

When we say dizziness, there are two different types of dizziness, so I want to clarify first:

Is what you are experiencing light headedness, where you feel a bit of the way like you might pass out and need to sit down? Or does it feel like the room is spinning?

The medications you are on for blood pressure can cause something called orthostatic hypotension - where blood pressure does not rise adequately when standing up quickly or accommodate adequately when standing for a while. This makes a person feel light headed. But usually that will go away when lying down.

On the other hand, vertigo, where the room feels like it's spinning, in it's most common form (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), causes dizziness when one's head position changes.

Are any of your medications new? And what medication do you take for the cholesterol?

Regarding the chapped lips in the morning, that may be due to drier air or to mouth breathing such as if you have allergies. It may not necessarily be related to the dizziness unless both are due to dehydration (and sometimes environmental allergies).

Thank you for your prompt attention to my concerns doctor . The dyziness is like the room is spinning dyzinees and when I bent and get up it feels like everything is spinning for a few seconds , and at same time I feel it sometimes when im laying down I feel the room spinning for a few seconds . The doctor changed one of my blood pressure pills back in October . I was taking 2 different blood pressure pills and limited to one . The one I mentioned above . I honestly don't remember the name of my previous blood pressure pill that he stopped me from . Also for my cholesterol I'm taking simvastatin pills don't remember the mgs though as I dong have my pills w me at the moment. My main concern can this be something bad ? Like a brain tumor related situation ? Or just simple vertigo or blood pressure reaction ? It just started happening almost 10 days ago and I will be examined by doctor in mid may . Waiting for ur answer thanks again ! So for my lips it might be dehydration u said ?

Update : I was taking the lisiloprin and doc changed my pills to valisartan in October . Also the mg for semvastin is 75mgs . Now u have a better idea I guess of my diagnoses ..???

Brief Answer:
Most likely BPPV (most common form of vertigo)

Detailed Answer:
The dizziness you are describing sounds like vertigo and not light headedness. The most common form of vertigo is BPPV which I mentioned above. It comes on rather suddenly and is due to certain substances in the inner ear being in the wrong place. Then when the position of the head is changed, it sets things in motion. BPPV is fairly common and a real nuisance!

Here is a video about it and a home remedy. To see it, you'll need to copy and paste it into your search bar.

Your welcome!

And about your lips, I don't think it is related to the vertigo - more likely mouth breathing while you sleep. That would be at the top of the list, and may be due to a stuffy nose while you sleep, or snoring.

I hope you have a good night and can kick the vertigo. If you are unable, doctors can do certain movement techniques such as the Epley maneuver, but I've had many patients report success with following the techniques in the video I sent.

Detailed Answer:
Your welcome.

I just want you to know, so that you don't end up paying extra, that every time a patient writes us, the physician is required to respond, even if it's a thank you. I believe if a person writes 4 times in a chain that they are charged a bit more. You don't have to close the chain if you don't want (I think it stays open for 2 weeks and then automatically closes if you haven't closed it). But I'll understand if I don't get a thank you (although I am always grateful to hear it!) because it might cost you more.
